<New> You and Your Judo: The Move Toward Transparency
Brought To You By The Ultimate Judo Success
The Move Toward Judoo and Grappling Transparency
by, Rhadi Ferguson, PhD
We’ve all heard the following before:
* I don’t do a lot of Newaza because there’s
no time on the ground
* That BJJ stuff is nothing but old judo
* You don’t need BJJ if you have a good judo
* I don’t practice those moves because there’s
no time for all of that
Well, here are the facts.
1. Most Judo players and most judo coaches
have HORRIBLE mat work.
— And many of the techniques that you see
done in judo are successful because the competitors
are just so tired from the demanding amount of
metabolic currency required from the pace of a judo
match. Therefore, even poor techniques tend to work
2. Most Judo instructors don’t KNOW a great
deal of newaza and cover up the fact that they
don’t by saying stupid sh*t like, “There’s no
time for that stuff in judo.” When the facts are
that they didn’t learn it, haven’t taken the time
to learn it and are covering up that fact that
they don’t know it.
3. The Judo players who do know mat work have
a tough time teaching it to students and parents
of children who have been brainwashed into thinking
that there is “no time for that stuff.”
Soooo, how do babies
learn to walk?
The fastest man on the planet, Usain Bolt, did not
come out of his mother’s belly running like he
Before he could even crawl, he couldn’t move.
Then he crawled and then he began to learn the
process of walking and running SLOWLY. .
NOW HE CAN DO, IN A SHORT TIME, WHAT TAKES YOU
AND I A LONG TIME TO DO.
Because he has gained a great deal of efficiency,
proficiency and economy with his movements.
The same goes for newaza.
The development of newaza, is easier than tachiwaza,
but it is not as rewarding as quickly.
You can throw somebody down easier do to the random
iterations of tachiwaza and just “wrestling around.”
But…. to beat someone with arm bars, chokes, mat
sequences and series, requires steps.
It requires that you drill.
It requires that you do the boring stuff.
Over and over and over.
Not One Or The Other
In order to achieve success in Judo, you must
learn all that judo has to offer.
I made it a point to learn Brazilian Jiujitsu
because I wanted to be a “complete” judo player.
If you have been coaching for 10, 20, 30 or more
years and you do NOT have a quality newaza game
then you are truly shortchanging yourself and the
students which you are teaching.
I can tell you right now that I feel the SAME
WAY ABOUT KATA. And I am KATA-DEFICIENT and
I HAVE AND AM TAKING STEPS TO ALLEVIATE THIS
ISSUE because, I cannot be a complete INSTRUCTOR
without this knowledge.
Thank you for your time today and for reading
and I hope that you will be honest and transparent
with your students and future clients.
DO NOT TELL PEOPLE THAT YOU DO BJJ if you teach
judo and are not a judo instructor.
DO NOT TELL PEOPLE THAT “you know all the stuff
already” when you do not.
BE HONEST. Be transparent and get the missing parts
of what it is that you do not have.
If you would like to start learning some quality
newaza and/or if you would like to truly accelerate
your Brazilian Jiujitsu training I can help.
I have some monthly seminars which are 8 hours where
I employ the elements of the best educational process
for teaching and learning which I have learned from
the experts and honed through years of application.
My next seminar is on the 31st of May and I literally
have 4 spaces left.
If you would like to join me in Tampa, Florida
(and lunch is on me), I would love to share my
mats with you.
